Ruohan Wang, Stigma of __: Representation of Mental Disorders in Media

"Stigma of __" is a video essay exploring the depiction of individuals with mental illness in mainstream media and its impact on societal perception of adolescents. With analysis and comparison between three media words (e.g., "Modern Love" Season 1, Episode 3, which is about bipolar disorder), Ruohan investigates how the portrayals of repulsive symptoms of mentalh illness and patients have undergone beautification or distortion. In the video essay, through interviews with two mental health workers and interviews with 10 teenagers, he aims to analyse to what extent these inauthentic portrayals in media impact the perceptions of adolescents regarding mental health.
